ABOUT AROUND THE GATE

In this debut collection, M. A. Nicholson opens up a telescopic view of New Orleans, past and present. Carolyne Wright, judge for the 2024 Hilary Tham Capital Collection, chose this collection for publication because of its “dark humor and the spirited persistence of the speaker and her fellow New Orleanian guides” who propel readers “through situations that present oblique, often unexpected views.”

According to Wright, Nicholson’s speaker and characters embody not the raucous New Orleans presented to tourists but instead “engage in more contemplative reflections and recollections, inviting readers to experience illuminating resonances as these poems go on ‘delivering / sustenance: / delivering / song.’”
